tunneling protocol: A communication standard used to manage tunnels and encapsulate private data. Data that is tunneled must also be encrypted to be a virtual private network (VPN) connection. Two commonly used tunneling protocols are the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP).
