intersite messaging service (ISM): A service that supports transports for asynchronous, site-to-site messaging. Each transport serves two major roles: send/receive and topology queries (such as, what are the various sites connected by this transport, and at what cost?). The intersite messaging services shipped in Windows are remote procedure call (RPC) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) (mail).
