security association (SA)

security association (SA): A combination of identifiers, which together define Internet Protocol security (IPSec) that protects communication between sender and receiver. An SA is identified by the combination of a Security Parameters Index (SPI), destination IP address, and security protocol (Authentication Header (AH) or Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP)). An SA must be negotiated before secured data can be sent.
