Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME): An extension of MIME that supports secure mail. It enables message originators to digitally sign e-mail messages to provide proof of message origin and data integrity. It also enables messages to be transmitted in encrypted format to provide confidential communications.
